Description Indian Wars era US M1873 socket bayonet for .45-70 Springfield trapdoor rifle, original metal scabbard and leather frog with US-marked brass belt hook. Rare UNUSED – this specimen is in excellent overall condition, considering the age. Original Indian Wars era Model 1873 socket bayonet for .45-70 Springfield trapdoor family of rifles. This bayonet is in rare UNUSED condition with original bluing intact and some of the original arsenal elbow grease still inside the socket. This specimen is better than average condition for the type; these M1873s are hard-to-find this nice and complete. The heavy-duty triangular “spike” blade is about 18-1/2” / 47 cm long; the bayonet is about 21-1/8” / 53.5 cm overall; socket length is about 3″ / 76 mm. The blade is straight with no nicks or dings on the spine or edges; original tip is intact. The blade is sharply stamped US / S on ricasso. Original locking ring and the screw are intact and well-oiled; the ring rotates nicely. The bayonet retained almost all of its original bluing; some dried up colsmoline oil on the side of the socked is noted for accuracy (cleanable). Original metal scabbard and the frog are in excellent shape, considering the age; most of these scabbards were made at the Springfield Armory. No dents or dings on the metal; most of the original bluing is intact. The leather is expectably dry but intact with all-original stitching intact still; original round brass US disk and brass belt hook are nice and tight. During WW2 years a lot of surviving M1873 “spike” bayonets were cut-up to make trench daggers and fighting knives like this one; this type is scarce this nice and complete. This scarce US M1873 socket bayonet has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos.
