In the 1939 Register he is shown living with his parents at 23 Woodstock Street, West Ham, London his occupation Paperboy.He enlisted on December 7, 1942, his trade on enlistment shown as a Carpenters Mate. He was 5foot 6 inches tall, 36.5 inch chest, dark brown hair and brown eyes, of dark complexion with a birthmark on his right neck and scar on right cheek.
