A first world war casualty medal group awarded to Midshipman Richard Albert Bryan, Royal Navy, who was sadly killed in action when HMS Russell struck two naval mines that had been laid by the German submarine U-73 when she was sailing off Malta.1914-15 Star named to Mid. R.N.Killed In Action – 27th April 1916The medals are in good condition but the star has remnants of an adhesive pad to the reverse.HMS Russell was was steaming off Malta early on the morning of 27th April 1916 when she struck two naval mines that had been laid by the German submarine U-73. A fire broke out in the after part of the ship and the order to abandon ship was passed after an explosion near the after 12-inch turret, she took on a dangerous list. She sank slowly, allowing most of her crew to escape but a total of 27 officers and 98 ratings were lost, including Richard Albert Bryan.Comes with some research.
